RIYADH - A total of 35 outstanding Saudi boys and girls students are preparing to travel to the United States on Friday to attend the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) 2023. Regeneron ISEF 2023, the world's largest pre-college STEM competition, will be held May 14 to 19 at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas, Texas.
The Saudi science and engineering team will compete with 1,800 students representing 70 countries. They have been selected from among 40 winners of the main prize of the National Olympiad for Scientific Creativity (Ibdaa) 2023. Regeneron ISEF finalists will compete for nearly $9 million in prizes, awards and scholarships.
Saudi Arabia will be represented at the world's largest science fair by King Abdulaziz and his Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity (Mawhiba) and the Ministry of Education. Ibadah is one of 20 different programs offered by Mawhiba each year for gifted students selected annually in the state.
Mawhiba Secretary General Dr. Amal bint Abdullah Al-Haja said that the Saudi team for science and engineering represents the kingdom's elite students who have reached this stage after a long journey of training, qualifying and participating in the Mawhiba program. He said that these programs qualify them and enable them to reach higher scientific and research levels. Dr. Amal expressed confidence that talented Saudi students will bring glory to the Kingdom this year as well.
Saudi students won a record number of 22 awards during ISEF 2022, including 16 grand awards, given by the competition organizers, and six special awards, given by local and international organizations.
This year's Saudi team members were nominated, following an intensive series of trainings by a group of Saudi and foreign trainers, including academics, experts and arbitrators in various disciplines.
It is noteworthy that the members of the Saudi Science and Engineering team were selected from among the 146,000 male and female students who registered for the Ibadah Olympiad 2023, with scientific projects covering 21 scientific fields.
